Who
are you?
Ross Smith
How old are you now?
34 What is it that got you into
freestyle?
Ii saw flatland in the mags and it looked fun
Did you ever race?
No
Who were some of your early influences?
Dennis Mccoy and Kevin Jones
How long have you been competing?
C
Competed alot from 86-90 then here and there a fewtimes since
Name some of your most memorable contests?
87 ohio afa masters. There were no good videos back then so it
was great to watch all the amazing riders there. A 100 kid stampede
to the corner where Dennis Mccoy started warming up was a sight
to behold. War of the Stars in Rochester NY in 89. Huge practice
area and a great turnout for the time.
So what’s the real story behind
Jerry Huey at the Norfolk VA contest in 1990?
We were just being rowdy teenagers away from home.
and he tried to kick us out of the room I paid for. He slept in
the lobby.
I have always thought of you as a very
original rider, what sparks your creativity and makes you come
up with the tricks you have since the 80s?
Other riders and music
List the tricks that you have invented or refined?
Just variations like hanglider pinky squeaks, reverse hitchhiker,
jumplashes, crossfooted backpacker, decade to scuff.
The magazines always were geared toward
trendy cloths and bikes did you feel separated from the flatland
society?
No, I felt comfortable
How do you feel about the progression of bikes and parts?
Its come a long way from the Skyway axle extenders and
forks that last only a month. Having every part on the bike designed
for flatland definitely nelps you progress quicker.
Where do you see flatland going in 2006?
Maybe more back wheel tricks
So what bike/parts are you riding nowadays?
Ares frame, Brickhouse stem, London Bars
What riders by decade 80/90/00 pushed
flatland beyond?
Mccoy and Jones in the 80's. 90's: Jones again, Chase, Farris,
Kuoppa and Worsely.
This decade theres so many riders on the cutting edge but the
ones that come to mind right now are Terry Adams, Cory Fester,
Alex Jumelin, alot of the Japanese riders.
Who are some of your favorite riders past
present?
Jones, Mccoy and Kuoppa
How many more years do you have in you
to ride?
Hard to say. With flatland its usually repetitive stress that
gets you. In the past I would work on 1 trick for hours at a time
and if something started hurting like ankle or shoulder I would
just keep going anyway. Its passion vs logic but
when you become obsessed with a new trick logic goes out the window.
Nowadays I try not to spend more than 15-20 min on 1 trick at
a time.
Anyone you would like to thank?
